Feeling Crabby in Baltimore :: MARYLAND

It was a quiet weekend with no plans lined up so we decided to take a day trip to Baltimore because he was craving crab cakes, and me, oysters. People think that we are crazy for driving 3 hours to another city just to go eat but we think that’s it’s crazy not to! There are so many eats to discover just within hours of our hungry bellies, and we have all day with nothing to do, so why not take advantage of the free time?

Thames Street Oyster House

Thames Street Oyster House is one of my favorite restaurants in Fell’s Point, Baltimore. It gets busy and you can expect a long wait time. If the weather is nice, ask for a seat at their outdoor patio. They have many different oysters choose from, many local and some flown in. The servers are friendly and efficient and they do the classics (crab cakes anyone?) really well and created some of their own darn tasty and pretty dishes too!

Captain James Crab House

We know that when you are in Maryland, you are supposed to eat Maryland crabs. The thing is… crabs are just WAY too much work to eat. My fingertips hurt from trying to peel the hard shell from the skin, the crab meat and juices fly all over and land in my hair and my hands smell fishy all day long. I’ll eat snow crab legs all day long though, but those hard bodied blue crabs? Nah. I’ll just take the lump crab cakes, thanks.

I like this place because of the large patio seating (I am a big fan of outdoor seating whenever the weather allows). I’ve heard that the crabs here are not as big and fresh as other spots, but it’s great for when you want to enjoy the cool end of summer days, a cold beer, crab cakes and snow crab legs!

Riptide by the Bay

We were just going for a little stroll down Thames Street, looking for a place to have a nightcap when we saw that one of the outdoor table (duh) was freeing up. We sat down, and as we were ordering some drinks and oysters, a man with a guitar started setting up at the open bay window right next to me and by the time the drinks arrived, he was singing beautiful acoustic ballads, with me in the best seat in the house. It was such a romantic ending to a beautiful and satisfying day.
